

The United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) leads global environmental action, working to inspire and enable nations and people to improve their quality of life without compromising future generations. World Environment Day is UNEP's largest annual communications initiative, mobilizing millions of people worldwide to take action for the planet. The 2022 campaign was especially significant: it marked the 50th anniversary of UNEP's creation and the 1972 UN Conference on the Human Environment, the first multinational meeting to establish the environment as a pressing global issue.
UNEP needed to reach a massive global audience and motivate them to take real action on environmental issues. World Environment Day happens once a year, which means the campaign had to make an impact fast.
The challenge wasn't just raising awareness. It was connecting individual actions to a global movement and sustaining momentum throughout the year. UNEP needed a campaign that would inspire people to act, track what actions they were committing to, and show the collective power of those commitments in real time.
With the 50th anniversary adding even more weight to the moment, the stakes were higher than ever.
We built the campaign around a single rallying cry: "Only One Earth."
We developed a narrative, content strategy, and visual brand assets that connected everyday actions to the bigger picture—reminding people that we only get one planet, and what we do matters.
Then we created a custom digital experience where users could participate in an interactive form, choosing the environmental actions they wanted to commit to. After selecting their actions, they received custom social graphics to share their commitment online and in their communities.
To make this work at scale, we built integrations with HubSpot and Webflow to capture data and help UNEP understand what motivated people to respond. Every action taken around the world appeared on an interactive map, visualizing the global movement and inspiring continued participation.
